Creating a design from scratch
We recently redid the guest bathroom in our home. Y’all, that bathroom had carpet in part of it, and it had been that way for the 20 years we’ve been in the home. Anyway, I wanted to decorate in there when the guys were done with it. I googled a few things to dress up the space and found some that I rather liked. It dawned on me that I should be able to create my own design with my Cameo and the Silhouette software. So, I did just that by trial and error!
I found some flowers that I wanted to use as a design element throughout. It is important to add that the bathroom has 3 rooms. The first has 2 vanities (this is where the carpet was). Between the vanities, there is a door that leads to the tub area. From there, another door leads to the potty closet. I wanted to create something that I could vary somehow in each area. The flowers in a design I found were very simple, but I didn’t know how to make the shape I needed to create it. Then I found it! In the line options of the Silhouette Studio software, there was the shape I needed!
I made this simple shape and duplicated it many times to create the flower.
At this point, I am super thrilled with myself. Then, I go to the Send panel. That’s when I realize that my “shape” was still just a line. Actually, many lines in a nice precise pattern, but lines nonetheless. Insert a loud sigh right here! (The only things that are going to cut are the red lines below.)
Then it hits me! Go back to the Design panel and use the trace tool to trace the lovely flower.
The traced design is now a compound path and can be filled with with a color. At this point, the design can be saved in your library. With Business Edition Silhouette Studio, it can be saved as an SVG file to your hard drive.
I duplicated the flower twice and moved them around until I was happy with the designs, creating the three large designs that I wanted for the largest of the rooms.
I created other design elements with these flowers for the rest of the bathroom. Part 2 of ‘Dressin’ Up the Bathroom’ will show how to do reverse canvases using these designs.
Excellent post!
Great content! Keep up the good work!
